Adhesive Type Guide — Choosing the Right System

🔴 Rubber Adhesive

High initial tack and good adhesion to a wide variety of surfaces. Best for general masking, duct, and holding applications. Good performance through moderate temperatures.

🔵 Acrylic Adhesive

Excellent long-term holding, UV resistance, and solvent resistance. Preferred for permanent or semi-permanent surface protection, erosion tapes, and outdoor applications.

⚪ Silicone Adhesive

Outstanding high-temperature performance and chemical resistance. Used for splicing silicone liners, powder coating masking, and aerospace high-temp process tapes.

⚫ PTFE Tool Surface

A backing class rather than an adhesive class, but worth calling out: PTFE tapes with silicone or acrylic adhesive give tooling a semi-permanent release surface up to 500°F, eliminating liquid release agent on the taped area.

Erosion protection tape primarily used on aircraft leading edges such as vertical stabilizers and horizontal stabilizers. Constructed of a polyurethane backing with a long-aging, solvent-resistant, pressure-sensitive acrylic adhesive protected by a transparent release liner. Qualified to leading aircraft manufacturer specifications for sand and rain erosion protection. The 8663DL version provides a moisture barrier for wet areas such as galleys, lavatories, and doorways.

The non-silicone version of the Flashbreaker line, for shops and programs where silicone adhesives are prohibited near bond surfaces. Green polyester film with a rubber based pressure sensitive adhesive, rated to 400°F (204°C) for oven and autoclave cures. Holds vacuum bagging materials and thermocouple wires on metal and composite parts and tooling, fixes consumables in position to prevent process errors, and makes resin flash removal easier at cleanup. Three thicknesses cover the range: 1R for general holding, 2R for added strength, 5R for the toughest pulls.

Flashbreaker 1R supplied as 1" × 2" pre-cut strips — 2,500 per roll. Glass-reinforced PTFE tapes with a silicone pressure sensitive adhesive, rated to 500°F (260°C), that give a mold, press platen, caul sheet, or any resin-contact surface a semi-permanent release face. No liquid release agent is needed on the taped surface, which removes a recurring cost and a source of part contamination. Also used to recondition worn or damaged flat tooling for extended service instead of remanufacture, and to improve tool surface finish and resin flow. Available in 1", 2", 36", and 48" widths.

Non-reinforced PTFE film tape for contoured tooling. With roughly 300% elongation it conforms to complex shapes where the glass-reinforced Tooltec grades will not lay down, and it seals master models and leaky tool surfaces while providing contamination-free part release to 500°F (260°C). CS5 carries a silicone adhesive; CA5 uses an acrylic adhesive for programs where silicone is prohibited. 6.5 mil total thickness.
